AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) is AMD’s advanced upscaling and frame generation technology for games, designed to enhance performance without significantly compromising image quality. Leveraging sophisticated image reconstruction algorithms and intelligent use of motion and edge data, FSR 4 enables games to be rendered at a lower resolution and then upscaled to the display’s native resolution while maintaining sharp, detailed visuals.

AMD just introduced support for FSR Upscaling 4.1 on RDNA 3 graphics architectures, but only for desktop cards at this moment. From now learning–based image upscaling is available to users of the previous GPU generation (Radeon RX 7000) without requiring a hardware upgrade. After a simple driver update, FSR 4.1 will deliver improved image quality and smoother gameplay in over 300 supported games.

FSR Redstone, in turn, is the new name for all new technology package and a major update to AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution technology, bringing it into the era of fully machine learning based rendering (ML).

Unlike its predecessor, FSR 3, which was compatible with nearly any modern graphics card, FSR 4 / Redstone is exclusive to AMD Radeon RX 9000 and for RX 7000 series GPUs (for now). Comparable technologies from competitors include NVIDIA DLSS 4 and Intel XeSS 2 (as well as XeSS 3 – all games that support XeSS 2 will also support XeSS 3).

FSR Redstone

FSR Redstone isn’t just a single upscaling mode – it’s a full suite of four powerful techniques: FSR Upscaling (4.1 at this moment), FSR Frame Generation, FSR Ray Regeneration, and FSR Radiance Caching:

• FSR Upscaling (formerly FSR 4) taps into neural networks to rebuild high-res images from lower-res sources, delivering near-native quality with a massive FPS boost.
• FSR Frame Generation crafts extra “synthetic” frames between traditionally rendered ones, using motion vectors and optical flow data to crank up animation smoothness by multiples.
• FSR Ray Regeneration acts as an AI-powered denoiser for ray tracing, sharpening reflection and shadow details while rivaling NVIDIA’s DLSS Ray Reconstruction head-on.
• FSR Radiance Caching leverages machine learning to speed up global illumination calculations, promising more realistic real-time lighting in future games at a fraction of the cost.

Redstone’s key ML features are tuned for RDNA 4 and RDNA 3 architecture GPUs like the Radeon RX 9000 series and RX 7000 cards. Overall, it closes the quality gap with DLSS by blending upscaling, frame gen, and ray reconstruction into one seamless neural rendering pipeline – AMD calls it the biggest FSR leap ever, with up to 3x FPS gains in select titles when stacking Upscaling + Frame Generation.
