I got a brick set for Christmas, specifically a laptop you assemble from bricks. At first, I thought it was a simple kit that would take me no more than 15 minutes to complete, but I was very wrong. The set has more than 900 pieces, so it turned into a much longer, but very satisfying, build.

This brick laptop is not some generic or fictional design – it is a specific Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Aura Edition 13th Gen. So there is nothing “budget” about it, and it is definitely worth getting to work.

Building a Lenovo brick laptop (video)

I recorded the entire assembly process on video, so you can follow exactly how it went. The actual build took me about 2.5 hours. Of course, the video is sped up so you do not have to watch it in real time, because that would be the kind of film that could probably put even the biggest brick fan to sleep.

As you can see, it took me a fair bit of time, and this is what the final result looks like. The bricks you see on the right are spare parts (at least that is what I am going to keep telling myself).

Were there moments during the build when I was swearing a bit? Only once, when I mixed up the colors on the display.

The attention to detail is impressive – the set even includes logo stickers that you need to apply to the finished laptop.

brick laptop lenovo thinkpad keyboard

You can easily build the laptop as a team of two – in theory, one person can focus on the screen and the other on the keyboard. The problem with that approach is that there is only one instruction booklet.

brick laptop lenovo thinkpad back

Time for a very unserious review. Overall, the laptop is rated positively – it operates silently, it is lightweight, although you have to handle it gently and carefully so that no bricks fall out when opening and closing it. Performance leaves a bit to be desired, but the fun of putting it together is priceless.

FAQ

How long exactly did it take to build this brick set?

About two and a half hours of pure building time.

Where can you buy this set?

Unfortunately, that is something I do not know. I got it as a gift and do not see similar sets in stores. It is most likely a limited promotional product.
